JMK here,
This review will actually be a follow up on my first ever movie review. It turns out that this review of mine was a bit rushed and a bit unstructured, and the only reason I made this was because I wanted to be relevant. Much like this movie.

Now, in honor of the Hotel Transylvania Short, that played before the main movie, I will review this movie with the same format that I used for my Samurai Jack reviews. By the way, that animated short was more entertaining than the movie.

Summary

Plot A: (Even thought it was predictable from the first trailer, and even if you haven't seen any of the trailers, it is still predictable.)
The Movie takes place in the phone of Alex (Jake T. Austin
) where we see a the emoji populated town of Textopolis. We see our main protagonist, the 'meh' emoji, Gene (T.J. Miller), who is the offspring of Mel Meh (Steven Wright) and Mary Meh (Jennifer Coolidge) who seems to have a unique "malfunction" when he is able to display a whole range of emotion other than 'meh'. This causes him to destroy his place of work on his first day and causes the dictator of Textopolis,
Smiler (Maya Rudolph) to send out robots to delete him. He seeks the help of a Hi-5 emoji (James Corden) who takes him to the looser lounge where all the unused emojis hang out. All that Hi-5 just wants is to be Alex favorite emoji again. Gene's disappointed parents follow suit.
They both leave the messaging app to find a hacker in a pirate app disguised as a dictionary. There they meet threats that you are more likely to find  on your laptop*. Spam (Rachel Ray), Internet Troll (Jeffrey Ross) and a Trojan Horse (Conrad Vernon). They eventually find the Hacker Jailbreak (Anna Faris). The deleting robots come in and delete the pirated goons while all three our heroes travel all around Alex's phone in order to get to Dropbox, the supposed 'heaven of the internet with a secure firewall.'

Along the way they go through a bunch of different apps which are, lets face it, are only product placements that helped to fund this movie and are only there to be shoved into kids faced and to pad out this movie. They go thought Candy-crush where Hi-5 just eats, barf and eats the same candy corn. Then they make it to the Just Dance app where we see Akiko Glitter (Christina Aguilera). Where it is reveled that Jailbreak is actual a princess. [link]

As the app interrupts Alex's class time he deletes the app and send Akiko and Hi-5 down to the recycling bin*. Unless this is a window phone or something this makes no sense. So the two ride along Spotify waves to get to the recycling bin and free Hi-5 and leave all the trolls, pirates and Akiko helplessly trapped in the recycling bin and are never seen again.

They finally make it to Dropbox. Where Gene tries to convey his love for the princess but get dumped and that is what causes him to go all meh. He get captured by the Mega robot (secure firewall my ass). Then the princess, in Snow White Fashion calls the Twitter bird. (Saw that coming). And they fly all the way back to Textopolis just in time to save Gene from Smiler and the Mega Robot. Mel confesses that he is the original malfunction and passed it on to his on. Just as the phone was about get deleted. The princess and Gene tires to send Alex one last text before the phone is completely erased. They succeed and Alex restores his phone. The emojis dance in Shrek 2 style . Smiler is seen with a dental brace and is playing cards with all the other unused emoji in the looser lounge.

Plot B: Gene's parents are pursued by the robots. They lose them in You Tube where they played back a 12 hr video of a kitten because internet. [link]

Outside the apps , Mel and Meh break up because of their parenting skills. Something kids can relate to. And then they reunite in Alex's Instagram France album. Where Mel confesses his love for Mary and his malfunction.

Plot C:  Alex wants to ask this girl, Addie (Tati Gabrielle out to the fall dance. But, instead of asking her out with words or even a text. He instead uses an emoji. The same wrong emoji Gene made that destroyed his place of work. And as the phone keeps messing with Alex's school life. He takes his phone to the service store to reset it. But just the phones was getting it's memory erased the Emojis sends a GIF emoji to Addie and that causes him to save his phone and impresses Addie enough to accept his offer to take him to the dance. And the two dance the night away.

Thoughts

Positives:

  1. I like the animation. I can see kids being amused by the bright colors.
  2. The voice acting is okay.
  3. I like the human character designs.
  4. I like the fact that they cast a a Latino kid to be the main antagonist.
  5. At least the intended message was wholesome.
  6. At least Gene and the princess never actually kiss.

Negatives:

  1. The teenagers are either stereotypes or cliched. Alex's story is nothing new, Addie is nothing more than but a plot point. What a shame she looked liked a really good looking goth child. Like Sony's Version of Violet Parr from The Incredibles. Speaking of which...
  2. RIP OFFS: A. Toy Story, B. Wreck It Ralph, C. Snow White, D. Inside Out, E. Lego Movie
  3. Asides from ripping off other better movies, this movie treated their suckered in celebrity cameo, Christina Aguilera, as if she herself does not belong in this world. She is the only human looking character in the phone. After the Just Dance app gets deleted Akiko is seen crying in a psychologically broken manner. And I felt sadness for her. For she was probably the only female, other than Addie that really overwhelmed me. So its heartbreaking to see a very upbeat and attractive girl just innocently doing her job suddenly gets sent to the trash along with all the trolls, spam and other baddies.
  4. When Hi-5 is rescued by Gene he leaves the tether line for the trolls and other to escape. But the movie took a mean spirited turn and left all of them in the trash and they are never seen again through out the rest of the film. Isn't this contradictory to the film's intended message? For young kids.
  5. The product placement is everywhere. I never noticed it at first but they actual managed to slip in  YouTube descriptions in Mel's dialogue and Dropbox feature promotion in Jailbreak's dialogue.* There is even a whole paragraph about all the product placements in the end credits right after all the songs they shoehorned in during the spottily scene.
  6. Can you believe that Sir Patrick Stewart, the man who recently finished LOGAN is playing a piece of Poop Emoji? Cause I was shocked as hell when I found out bout this? Seriously man what are you doing here?
  7. Get this, here are some other voice actors who got to play a role in this movie. The Three Monkey's (Eric Bauza), Elizabeth Daily, Keith Ferguson, Nose Emoji (Phil LaMarr), Tara Strong and Fred Tatasciore. The list goes on. Thank Christ that these talented voice actors were all just playing extras.
  8. There was an email found in the recycle bin that Alex had intentionally deleted but Hi-5 found and turns to to be a reminder of when he was Alex's favorite emoji. But the email just turned out to be lyrics ripped of from Rihanna - Diamonds. Yet the song was never referenced or mentioned in the end credits.
  9. How does unplugging your phone from the laptop resetting it automatically restored your entire software? Plot over logic. That's how.
  10. The feminism is show ripe in Jailbreaks dialogue. I guess the writers were inspired by this:
  11. It was a cringe fest to say the least. But near the end of the film Jailbreak decides to dump her ideals of being a rebel and goes back to being what she was to told to be from the beginning, a princess. This makes her whole feminist rant seem hypocritical and thus rendered null and void. Why? Because of the love she feels for Gene. And the fact that the movie contradicted it own message. Thinking that was the lesson only Gene should learn and nobody else.
  12. If you think Mary Meh was a convincing character, I personally believe Maud Pie from My Little Pony can pull off a better performance than her.
  13. I guess the fact that our main character is named Gene Meh unlike his parents who are named Mel Meh and Mary Meh, was the first sign of him being the black sheep in the family.
  14. The plot is done a hundred time before. Young kids who very little movie experienced will not mind but use older more experienced movie goers can predict the plot every in almost singe scene.
  15. The 3D was not as impressive as I though.
  16. I almost fell asleep during this movie.
  17. I almost laughed and almost cried but I couldn't bring myself to it. I wanted to be as unmoved as possible. Just so that I can clarify everyone's fears.
  18. If I were to pick apart every pothole in this movie I would be typing out this journal all night.
  19. The adult joke about the Candy Crush game making Alex sound like pervert in from of Addie was supposed to be funny but I found it kind of...well purvey.
  20. Alex's fellow high school student's are depicted as a bunch of mindless zombies addicted to their smartphones. While this is true in real life, here this is misrepresentation at its worst. The teacher asks them what hieroglyphics remind the student of but they stand there as if they drained their own brain cells of something.
  21. Alex's friend tells him that "Word's aren't cool." Its like the movie is forcing young kids to invest in nothing but emojis.
  22. Most importantly: The do not mention what happened to Akiko during the dance scene what so ever. They just left her crying in the trash heap probably never to seen again, unless they make sequel. Which, according to the box office records, do not stop Sony's chances to make a sequel.
*I only found out about these facts from other people's reviews. Most of which were enraged, disappointed and frustrated. And I can't blame them.

Conclusion

I can see how this movie make people loose their mind. But, not to brag, I am not a hater of any thing animated. Sure I can see flaws in the story, plot and product placement is horrific. But like I said in my review, I was just meh. I didn't exactly form a bond with the emoji's, instead I bonded with Akiko. And seeing as how she was tossed aside like garbage... :(

All in all this is a very harmless movie. It make Norm of the North look bad...worse. At least this story has an easy to follow story. It may have given some people Pixels (2015) vibe.
Overall this movie left no impact on me. It was on par with an episode from The Powerpuff Girls Reboot. Seriously, EG Daily? Seriously, Tara Strong? You two voice acting goddesses reunited for this? I never really gotten angry about this movie until I learned about how it was made through online source.

Thanks for reading and watching these videos. For all the internet critics out their. I weep for you. As for me. I am gonna take a long, long break from emojis. That means no YouTube comments, reviews about this movie and any mention about this movie at all. For as long as I can.
