I have been a fan of the Transformers ever since I was a kids watching the first Live Action Movie. I never had any problems with the movie because I was introduced to this movie before looking at the history of the Transformers and Generation 1. Even when I am 19 years old and attending college as a student of animation I still can't hate Micheal Bay's work even though I can see why other fans so. The Cybertronians may appear after a human scene but when they do join the humans, they take up the least amount of time. There was barley any room for any of the bot character development. The robots mostly arrive in time for the government to attack and when they do attack, there were just too many explosions. The story is pretty much the same. A Civil War is waged between Autobots vs Decepticons, The Autobots win and guy gets girl. I followed the movie series up to today and I still love it.
So when I watched the first trailer for "The Last Knight" I was hyped.
Then I watched the second trailer...
..and these are my opinions, other than the fact that we are gonna see some EPIC new bots and more off world AWESOMENESS.
In this trailer, it seem that the main focus is on Izzy and her stance on female's rights. Many of the commentator and even BeyondTheTrailer say that this trailer is just feminist propaganda. I have to agree with them on this. Through out the entire live action movie timeline it seems that the Cybertronians, no matter how awesome they are and how much they have been though, take up back seat. The humans always seem to take up more screen time than the robots. Even when they are just doing stuff that doesn't add to the story. In the end it was all just like the original Generation 1 cartoons, they were just made to sell toys. Except this time there are hot girl just looking good. Some of them are kick ass. Others are just, there. In this trailer alone, Izzy seem to take center stage even with all the awesome stuff going on, mainly with the bots. It is awesome that movies are starring stronger female lead characters. This is still no way to present a strong female character. If anything she is acting like another pawn of feminism. That is even worse than acting like a geek's sex doll.
Lets look back at the movies:
- 2007: Mikaela Banes was mostly a kick ass girl who looks good standing next to car hood. Maggie Madsen was smart and awesome but again another sex doll. The movie ended with Sam and Mikaela making out on Bee's hood. It was nice way to seal the deal after everything but it looked like the ending of a teen drama film. It was as if all story was is just another teen drama with a robot civil war in the background.
- Revenge of the Fallen: Mikaela was there just to look good on motorcycles, change her clothes out in the open, and act as the sex object for Wheelie. Alice, on the other hands acts like another sex object, up to the point where we see a shot of her panties. Even after an event as tragic as the Death of Optimus Prime, she thinks about her relationship with Sam. She runs though the battlefield of Egypt in slow mo just so that the geeks can see her cleavage. I have to admit she seemed very emotionless when she see Sam cheating on her. Then when she sees him dead, she gets emotional. Kinda force don't you think?
- Dark of the Moon: The new girl, Carly is still another sex doll. She walks in the scene with her undies visible to the audience, looks good coming out of Soundwave and act as if she is modeling. Kinda like Enchantress from Suicide Squad. The Latino woman in Sam's workplace only came to be another bombshell and nothing else. When I saw DOTM for the second time and I felt something went wrong with Carly. When Carly saw Laserbeak grab Sam she walks as if she was on a catwalk. Her face says distress but her body says ''work it, girl.''.In the end it was about Sam and Carly getting married as if that was what the film was about. In her defense she did convince Megatron to take action against Sentinel Prime she was very brave.
- Age of Extinction: The new girl, Tessa and her friends act like "Girl's just wanna have fun" stereotypes. There is even close up shot her short-shorts. She walks out of her house with a bouncer missile inside as it was nothing. Through out most of the movie, she looked like the damsel distress. Even when her, Cade and Shane are being chased by Cemetery Wind, all that is happening is a basic family squabble over her boyfriend issues. When Prime engages Galvatron, she wandered around the field up to the point where she gets trapped in the cars that end up on the Knight ship. Even when I saw the movie for the first time I still felt like that scenario could have gone better. When she was Lockdown's ship, she did get out the car all by herself just before it got scrapped. She also managed to run away from the pack of Steeljaws. That was awesome, but not enough to push her character forward.
Now that I have compared all the other girls from the entire Transformers Live Action series, lets compare Izzy to the female leads from the other movies from 2017.
NB: There is no Episode VIII official trailer out yet.Finn is pretty kick ass. No mention of feminism what so ever and no acting like she wants to take center stage.
Izzy cool but the Daughter of Logan is way more kick ass than Izzy. She didn't speak about female rights. She barley spoke at all.
NB: Please do not SPOIL Logan for me.
So, it is true. This trailer was focusing on feminism. The other movies have strong female roles who did not succumb to the damsel in distress or feminist cloy and from what I hear, those movies rocked. So that mean that ''The last Knight'' will suck, let just watch it to find out.
UPDATEWhat I said in the above was just what almost everyone else thinks about the trailer. I got so wrapped up in what others think that I may not have made it clear about what I think. still love this series and I am still gonna watch the next movie. What I meant to say was I am glad that there are little kids in this movie, they remind me of Sari from TF Animated or The kids from TF Prime. The whole movie looks like it is gonna go for the more gritty approach as oppose to the more posh looking prequels. There is this whole All Out war vibe I get from watching the final trailer but there is just one problem. Izzy took to center stage and started ranting about being a girl and stuff. This is kinda of cliché. I wouldn't mind if she took center stage and talked about something bigger than her. Okay, I admit this was a cool idea. I didn't hate it, I just thin that it could have gone a little better. Micheal Bay has taken the right steps in making the females more respectable but the Bots are not the focus of the trailer, like in the first Trailer. I get that we need to look at the human characters which is cool for a TV spot but not for a new trailer.....
Okay, what am I saying...?
What I am trying to say is...that I love everything about this trailer. It is just that everyone else opinion just interesting to me. After all, I create art based on social commentary, mainly political. That's my problem, I was so focused on the political aspect of the trailer that I sis not focus on the story. Now wonder I did not fell the hype at its fullest. I am still intransigent on my view on the Transformers movies and I have no problem with the Micheal Bay Transformers.
JMK Over and out.
